A. I only know of eight unless you count compensation. They are repression, rationalization, displacement, sublimation, projection, reaction formula, denial, and regression. Acceptance might also count as the ninth. You can find an example of each at www.expandmind.com/freud. htm

What would cause a 9 month old to suddenly have nightmares and be afraid of baths and showers?
Q. My 9 month old niece is suddenly afraid of baths, showers and is having nightmares. She has always, from birth, been one to wake up happy. Now she is suddenly waking up screaming. Does anyone have ideas as to what may be bothering my little girl?
Asked by Nikki - Mon Nov 17 11:36:00 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Around that age, they call this "separation anxiety" which is totally normal. She needs to be close to familiar ones. If you play "peek-a-boo" with her, it will help her learn that familiar faces always come back. At that age, babies do not have any notion time. Night or day, she will need to be re-assured. She may have had nightmares but does not understand that fact because she is too young. Good luck to the parents: this will pass.

why are old dc 9 planes still in service?
Q. These planes are too old. I've heard the recent crash in Congo was a DC 9.

A. Ok lets get this straight the plane that crashed in the Congo, what about that sounds right? Its in Africa for god sake and they have no regulations to keep them safe and maintained which they don't do well in poor countries, further more DC-9's are good planes and have an excellent safety record for almost 40 yrs. in service. You have know idea what you are talking about.

What size clothing would a 9 lbs baby need?
Q. We had a scan today at 35 weeks (we're 36 tomorrow) and they reckon our bub is already over 7 lbs and we should prepare for at least a 9 pounder. Is 000 clothing still okay? She has broad shoulders too apparently (yeah, thanks for telling me, doc!). Even though I know these are all just estimates, big bubbas run in the family so I expect them to be pretty spot on. Thanks!

A. My son is 18 months and bedtime is 8:30 every night no matter if he fusses and crys about it.You are the parent and the child needs to know that you are in control.Let him fuss and fight-but don't change the bedtime.Eventually he will learn to sooth himself to sleep and learn that putting up a fight gets him nowhere.

How to adjust cheesecake from two 9" springforms to one 13x9 cake pan?
Q. I normally make my cheesecakes in two 9" springform pans. I butter up the insides of the pans liberally so the cake separates from the pan easily. My crust is basically a liberal amount of butter and crushed Famous Amos cookies. I bake the two cakes at the same time for 3 hours at 200 degrees. What adjustments should I make if I want to bake one cake in a 13x9x2 glass cake pan?

How is it that California and Oregon have a 9%+ income tax and Washington has no income tax?
Q. I live in San Francisco and pay California's (in my opinion) outrageous 9.3% tax rate. In looking around I notice that Oregon has a 9% top rate while Nevada and Washington have no income tax. I know that Oregon has no sales tax, so that sort of explains things there. But can someone explain for me the basics of why California appears to be so much more expensive than Nevada and Washington? Is there some way as a California resident I can take advantage of something to avoid paying what appears to be thousands of dollars more than I would pay if I moved to Seattle? Alternately, is there some tax that they pay in Washington that I'm not considering? Finally, is it just that the California government is stupid and inefficient, or are they… [cont.]

A. Most of the difference has to do with Prop 13's effect on California. While anyone who purchases a home pays taxes on the current value of the property, someone who has lived in the same home for years is locked in at a much lower rate. For example, know of someone who purchased home in 1976 for $42,000. Property taxes are less that $250 a year. My property in Oregon is on the tax roles at $85000 and I pay $1300 a year. Like Cali, my tax increase every year at a minimum rate, but in Washingotn that's not the case. That said, yes, you can save tax dollars in Washington or Oregon over Cali. But you don't have the weather, job oppertunities, entertainment or sports activities that large numbers of people generate. For me, none of the… [cont.]

How could Saudi Arabia have helped stop 9-11 when it was a bunch of Iraqis that attacked us?
Q. Why would Saudi Arabia have anything to do with 9-11? I mean, we attacked Afghanistan and Iraq because they were the enemy, right?

A. I can't tell if you are being serious or subversive. Fifteen of the 19 September 11th hijackers were Saudi nationals. The others were from other places, but none of them were Iraqi. Afghanistan had, indeed become a training ground for terrorism. The Taliban was openly supporting al-Queda, making them a fair target. Iraq was never a threat to us. Hussein, while a cruel, evil dictator, was a secular (not religious) guy. bin Laden wouldn't have crossed the street to talk to him. So Iraq was a war of choice, that's all.

A. Divide the 1.0 ml between the two dogs, but be careful. If your dogs arent super tick/flea machines, have you considered Frontline spray? It's a way that we economized with farm cats...one bottle lasted the whole summer between about 6 cats, and wasnt super expensive. Just a thought. ADD: Here's a link:

How big will my 9 weeks old chihuahua get to at full grow age?
Q. I just went to petstore today to pick up a sweater for my 9 weeks old chihuahua and weight him on their weight machine and I was so surprise because he weight at 4 pounds. I wouldnt think it were normal for his breed to be that big at only 9 weeks so I was wonder how can I figure out his full grow weight?
Asked by cuddlypanda79 - Sun Oct 7 15:59:03 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Don't trust that scale - you should be taking him to the vet shortly for a booster shot - make sure they weigh him while you are there and tell you his exact weight. But if that scale was correct, your puppy is already off the chihuahua puppy growth rate chart which someone else posted for you (it only covers chis that will be 6 pounds or less final adult weight). A 9 week old who weighs 4 pounds is likely to end up in the 9 or 10 pound range. I had a 10 weeker who weighed 3 pounds who is 6 months now and pushing 7 pounds - she'll likely make 8 pounds full grown. Chihuahuas over 6 pounds are too big for the AKC show ring, but that doesn't mean they are any less chihuahua. Unfortunately the "in" things right now are unnatural "teacup" [cont.]

Again depends on how it was configured but this particular aircraft had four seats in a "club" one three place couch and another 2 large seats across from that...VERY roomy lav, one of the larger I have seen on a a private jet.

A. Whatever you have is fine. With babies, it's awfully hard to find black clothing. As long as it's not loud colors or gaudy, whatever you have is acceptable for a baby.

How much time should a 9 mth old spend outside?
Q. I take my 9 mth old on a couple walks everyday, and we sit and play in the grass a lot. I also pick her flowers when we are walking, (and I watch her very closely to make sure she doesnt eat them.) I think nature is important and peaceful, and I want her to feel that way, too. Does anyone else have any thoughts on that? How often does (or did) your 9 mth old spend outside?

A. I have a 9 month old daughter and we go outside all the time.. When she's crabby that's about the only thing that makes her quiet is going outside. I doesnt matter how long you go outside with your baby as long as she is dressed for the weather and have a diaper bag on handy with extra clothes and wipes (incase your daughter gets dirty) and water or juice. Going outside with your baby is a learning experience for them to learn and understand there surroundings!
