An abbey (from Latin abbatia, derived from Syriac abba, "father"), or nunnery, is a Christian monastery or convent, under the government of an Abbot or an Abbess, who serves as the spiritual father or mother of the community. The term can also refer to an establishment which has long ceased to function as an abbey, but continues to carry the name—in some cases for centuries (for example, see Westminster Abbey below).

How long did it take for the British to build Westminster Abbey?
Q. The reason I ask is because my parents just got back from a week long visit to England to visit my brother and his family. They brought back pictures of Westminster Abbey, and the detail put into this church is absolutely insane! To anyone who answers, thanks in advance! Really curious about this.

A. Hi - we started building the current Abbey (not a church, please!) in 1245. Many would argue that the work continues to this day, with, for example, the funeral of Princess Diana taking place there. However, there was a church on the site, no longer there, for many centuries before that. The Abbey has a wonderful site, linked below, with loads of fascinating information - and if you do get to London, do come and see inside, please: we promise to make you very welcome! Does this help, please? Alun Hill MCIJ

In Northanger Abbey, what exactly is Jane Austen trying to say about novel reading? ?
Q. I find Jane Austen's use of irony, satire, and parody, quite confusing when trying to determine her intent in writing Northanger Abbey. Is she defending 'Gothic Fiction' or is she scorning it? Thoughts? Also what about novel reading in general? In what ways does Northanger Abbey make a case for the value and pleasures of novel reading?

A. Austen talks about the joys of reading, but Catherine takes the love of Gothic novels too far in her suspicions about Adm. Tilney. Austen was a fan of gothic novels and read many of them, but in Northanger Abbey she was writing a clever satire on the genre. The book definitely makes a case for the pleasures of reading, but it also warns of the dangers in letting your imagination run away with you.

is my money safe with abbey and natwest?
Q. I have money (current account and savings) with Abbey and Natwest. How safe are these banks at the moment and what will happen to my money if either of these banks fails?

A. Abbey, most definitely yes. Its owned by Santander and is actually expanding its business, it bought part Bradford and Bingley last week so wouldn't worry about that. Not sure about Natwest though.
