Composers are generally people who write music. In certain musical genres, such as popular and folk music, the term "songwriter" means someone who authors both music and lyrics, but such a person may also be properly called a "composer." If a songwriter also performs, he or she is called a "singer/songwriter."

Q. I have been reading through the Riemenschneider collection of Bach chorales, and so far, I haven't found a single augmented sixth chord. Nor does Malcolm Boyd's book on the Bach chorales make any mention of the subject. In Chapter 24 in Walter Piston's Harmony textbook, he gives an example from the Bach b minor mass, but I can't see it. Other than that, his earliest examples are from Mozart and Haydn. It really became a staple of the harmonic palette the classical period, and you can find it in frequently in such masters as Mozart, Haydn, and Hummel. It really reached its peak during the 19th century and was used in different ways and a lot less predictably than in the 18th. Tristan is a perfect example of this. But yeah, it entered into common usage during the classical period.
