An infant or baby is the term used to refer to the very young offspring of humans.

Infant

The term infant derives from the Latin word infans, meaning "unable to speak."

In medical terms, an infant is any child up to 2 years of age.

"Infant" is also a legal term referring to any child under the age of legal adulthood.

Newborn

In medical terms, a newborn is any child from birth to 24 hours of age. However, the common usage is more vague and can include children even up to a few days or a month old.

Neonates

A human infant less than a month old is a neonate. The term "newborn" includes premature infants, postmature infants and full term newborns.

Toddlers

Toddlers are generally vaguely defined as a child between 1 and 2 years, and generally signifies a child who can walk but who can not walk well.

Before birth

Medically speaking, a child is referred to as a fetus before it is born. However, the child is often referred to as a baby before it is born by the pregnant mother, family members, and others, such as in the common question, "How is your baby doing? Is your baby a boy or a girl?" and it would be inappropriate to use the word fetus in that context.

The increasing trend of using 3D ultrasound to visualize the baby before birth has increased the perception of the unborn child as a baby.

How do I get one baby rabbit to stay with the other four babies in the nest box?
Q. Our rabbit had five babies together, all in the nest box. Four of the babies are staying together in the next box, in the hollow dug out by their mom, but one baby keeps crawling out and across the nest box, away from the other babies. How to I keep them together?

A. This depends on how old they are. If they are 10 days or older, they are probably OK out of the nest box, and mom will sometimes put them back in. If not, you need a taller rim ( mine is usually 4-6 in) on the opening to the box. In other words, it should be deeper. I hope that makes sense. Also, add hay or a mat outside the box to prevent exposure if he jumps out again.

How long do mice babies need to be with their mother?
Q. My brothers mice just had babies. ( Even though the pet store said they were both male!). How long do the baby mice have to stay with their mothers before we can do something with them?

A. They can be taken away from the mom around 3-4 weeks of age. If the mother and father were not separated BEFORE the litter was born, she may actually be pregnant again, and will give birth 3 weeks after her first litter. Make sure to separate all pups into male and female groups before 6 weeks of age, or they will ALL breed with each other!! Each mom can have a dozen pups, so you do the math. That's a lot of pups in a very short amount of time. Males have a larger ano-genital space (space between the genitals and anus) and females have a much shorter one. If you hold the pups up by the tail, supporting the body with your other hand, you can look under the tail and compare males from females. Also, around 10 days of age, when they… [cont.]

How old are babies when they really start to speak?
Q. I'm totally aware that babies say, "ga-ga, da-da, and ma-ma," but when do they REALLY begin to communicate verbally? I am also aware that sign-language is another option, meaning that the brain is functioning well. In fact, my eight-month-old is able to communicate through signing clumsily, but her mouth is not accustomed to moving dexterously enough to speak. I would like to know what sort of a jump she has gotten in communicating. When I said that my 8-month-old can communicate clumsily, she understands about five signs, but only can depict two; "more" and "milk." Her 5-year-old brother and I sign repetitively with her.
