Its name in English ( / ˈ dʒ eɪ /) is pronounced jay. It was formerly jy (from French ji) and still is in some dialects, where it is sometimes pronounced, in parts of Scotland, as / ˈ dʒ aɪ /. HistoryJ originated as a swash character to end some Roman numerals in place of i. There was an emerging distinctive use in Middle High German. Gian Giorgio Trissino (1478–1550) was the first to explicitly distinguish I and J as representing separate sounds, in his Ɛpistola del Trissino de le lettere nuωvamente aggiunte ne la lingua italiana ("Trissino's epistle about the letters recently added in the Italian language") of 1524. Originally, both I and J represented /i/, /iː/, and /j/; but Romance languages developed new sounds (from former /j/ and /ɡ/) that came to be represented as I and J; therefore, English J, acquired from the French J, has a sound value quite different from /j/ (which represents the sound in the English word "yet"). GNU Free Documentation License Should I use a J-Channel or starter strip of vinyl siding for a shed sitting on a cement pad? Q. I had someone tell me to use a J-channel, but I am not sure. The shed sits on a cement pad so the J channel would nearly be right on the cement. I am concerned about rain falling in the j-channel and not being able to get out. Thanks! Well, most of the photography courses I have taken that were college intro level, required a film camera with external flash unit. Depends on who is teaching, but with digital cameras most of the time the image processing standards are non existent, and the assignments will come in in all hues imaginable. Film and Manual mode leaves it all to the student to compose, and to the school to standardize the processing. You can look for a good Pentax K1000, the quintessential camera for students and incredibly reliable, and also Canon E series and Nikon F series. Nowadays you can look in Craigslist in your local area, and find nice packages with a flash unit, a couple of lenses, for a couple hundred dollars, or even less.
