A librarian is an information professional trained in library and information science, which is the organization and management of information services or materials for those with information needs. Typically, librarians work in a public or college library, an elementary or secondary school media center, a library within a business or company, or another information-provision agency like a hospital or law firm. Some librarians are independent entrepreneurs working as information specialists, catalogers, indexers and other professional, specialized capacities. Librarians may be categorized as a public, school, correctional, special, independent or academic librarian. Outline, requirements and positionsTraditionally, librarians have been associated with collections of books, as demonstrated by the etymology of the word "librarian" (< Latin liber, 'book'). However, modern librarians deal with information in many formats, including books, magazines, newspapers, audio recordings (both musical and spoken-word), video recordings, maps, manuscripts, photographs and other graphic material, bibliographic databases, web searching, and digital resources. Librarians often provide other information services, including computer provision and training, coordination of public programs, basic literacy education, assistive equipment for people with disabilities, and help with finding and using community resources. GNU Free Documentation License Can Librarians show their tattoos at work? Q. I want to be a librarian. Would I have to covor up my tattoos while I work? Asked by Erica - Wed Nov 18 11:14:26 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. Tattoos are generally fine, a bad attitude towards one group of people or another is not. I don't believe having a tattoo is a "protected class" so in your interview you might be asked how would you respond to an elderly man who disapproves of your tattoo, and if you responded that you would tell him to drop dead, then you wouldn't get the job,...obviously. People without tattoos aren't asked that question, again obviously, and interviewers in some locations MUST ask each interviewee the same questions, so they wouldn't be able to ask you about your tattoos which could work against you because a potential employer needs to know how you would respond to criticism. This is something that sounds pretty obvious as opposed to a flower on… [cont.] Answered by Larry B - Wed Nov 18 19:58:48 2009 What are some excellent novels that feature librarians? Q. My fiancee is a librarian. What are some novels that you've read and would recommend featuring one or more librarians? Please only books that you have read and enjoyed, no random stuff from Amazon searches. Thanks :-) Asked by burnsbert - Tue Jul 11 15:32:08 2006 - - 12 Answers - 2 Comments A. Ah...a question after a librarian's own heart. How sweet that you're looking for books for her about librarians. Now that is a considerate and thoughtful partner. Fiction wise: Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi It takes place during WWII centered around a dwarf woman named Trudi. Her father is a librarian, and Hegi does a marvelous job of capturing the comfort and sanctity of a library. Not to mention the rest of the story is engaging and fascinating. It's an emotional roller coaster, but it's an amazing book, well-written and worthy of the awards it has won. Murder at the Library of Congress by Margaret Truman A rather pithy murder mystery from Harry's daughter that takes place in the Mecca of libraries. It's a fun… [cont.] Answered by bibliophile_1976 - Tue Jul 11 16:47:15 2006 How often do librarians use book reviews in developing their collections?
