SPQR is an initialism from a Latin phrase, Senatus Populus que Romanus ("The Senate and Roman People"), referring to the government of the ancient Roman Republic, and used as an official signature of the government. It appears on coins, at the end of documents made public by inscription in stone or metal, in dedications of monuments and public works, and was emblazoned on the standards of the Roman legions. The phrase appears many hundreds of times in Roman political, legal and historical literature, including the speeches of Marcus Tullius Cicero and the history of Titus Livius. Since the meaning and the words never vary, except for the spelling and inflection of populus in literature, Latin dictionaries classify it as a formula.

A. The senate and the people of rome. S.P.Q.R. is an initialism in Latin that was emblazoned on the standards of the Roman legions and was used by the Roman republic and the Roman empire. It currently appears in the modern coat of arms of the city of Rome, as well as on many of the city's civic buildings and manhole covers. The latter were originally placed by order of Mussolini, who frequently used SPQR as propaganda for his regime. The initialism itself is subject to ongoing debate, with divergent phrases and translations offered as explanations. Like any translation, initialisms are of debatable value and accuracy, as the meanings of words are subject to both change and complexity. Its meaning was probably of archaic origin even during… [cont.]

Ancient Roman Legionnaire's Tattoo?
Q. Hi I was wondering are there any similar tattoos to the SPQR ones that you around see so often? I've been trawling the internet looking examples but all i can find are pictures of huge muscular bald 40 year old men with great big sleave tattoos and different latin phrases etc. I only want a little tattoo that has some meaning. Any ideas would be great :)

A. I don't agree with RE about tattooing in general, but I agree that nothing would be authentically Roman and honourable. The Britons might have been tattooed (though the meaning of the single data point in Caesar's Gallic Wars - "Omnes vero se Britanni vitro inficiunt" - is debated). You certainly could find some design more personally meaningful than a logo from a long-defunct empire. Besides, SPQR is a bit of a joke since the finance gurus started using it to mean Small Profits: Quick Returns.
