A mathematician is a person whose primary area of study and/or research is the field of mathematics. Problems in MathematicsThe publication of new discoveries in mathematics continues at an immense rate in hundreds of scientific journals. One of the most exciting recent developments was the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles, following 350 years of the brightest mathematical minds attempting to settle the problem. There are many famous open problems in mathematics, many dating back tens, if not hundreds or over two thousand years. Some examples include the ancient problems related to perfect (and multiply perfect) numbers, the Riemann hypothesis (from 1859) and Goldbach's conjecture (1742). The Millennium Prize Problems highlight longstanding, important problems in mathematics and offers a US$1,000,000 reward for solving any one of them. One of these problems, the Poincaré conjecture (1904), was proven by Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman in a paper released in 2003; peer review was completed in 2006, and the proof was accepted as valid. From Google News Search: "Mathematicians" How and where did the mathematicians and philosophers before, get the equations and formulas in math? Q. Everytime I attend my math class, i get awestruck at the equations and formulas that my teacher shows and explains to us. I was just wondering how the mathematicians and philosophers came up with these equations and formulas that are connected to each other. How long and how did they do it??? Asked by Miah - Tue Dec 19 21:13:57 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. They had way too much time on their hands. Yahoo! Answers didn't exist back then. Answered by attn deficiency. - Tue Dec 19 21:18:02 2006 Is the universe mathematical as mathematicians like to think? Q. If so why do many areas of social science look so uncomfortable alongside equations? Our inner thoughts are part of the universe after all. Not sure that science is 'homing in' on the correct age of the universe- still huge problems with dark matter and anomalous expansion- maths usually does the job because it deals with everything from 0 to infinity and more- still had to invent some for quantum mechanics though- and is predictive power enough? Need a theory be intuitively comprehensible? Asked by metalscorpionhare - Fri Apr 4 09:56:35 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, it is mathematical: Over the last three years, a number of fundamental issues in quantum gravity were addressed in the framework of quantum geometry 13.7 billion years after the Big Bang: now. The melting point of water is 273 Kelvin; the boiling point is 373 Kelvin. 200 million years after the Big Bang: `reionization': rst stars heat and ionize hydrogen gas. Temperature: roughly 50 Kelvin. 380 thousand years after the Big Bang: `recombination': hydrogen gas cools down to form molecules.
