West is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of east and is perpendicular to north and south. By convention, the left side of a map is west. To go west using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 270°. West is the direction opposite that of the Earth's rotation on its axis, and is therefore the general direction towards which the Sun sets. During the Cold War "the West" was often used to refer to the NATO camp as opposed to the Warsaw Pact and non-aligned nations. The expression survives, with an increasingly ambiguous meaning. All of the above require a little watering to get established, but after that you can pretty much ignore them! The address at 100 Charlton Street is the western part of Soho. West 20th Street is in Chelsea. Both are nice, happening neighborhoods. While you could walk the distance between the two, it's a fairly long walk. With luggage, it wouldn't be too much fun. I love walking long distances in Manhattan. It's a great way to enjoy the City. But if you are talking about really getting somewhere, and doing it with luggage, no less...well, I'd take some form of transit. The subway isn't that convenient between those two locations.
