From North America, if your destination is on the east coast of Asia, you will fly westward. If your destination is anywhere in Europe, middle east, you will be going eastward. Certain flights will go over or near the arctic region ex flights from YVR (BC, Canada)to PEK (capital of china). The Earth is a globe, so the closer to the poles you go, the less distance you will actually need to fly. (great circle route: in the jet stream, winds can reach in excess of 100mph, which would either help an aircraft immensely or impede an aircraft's trip (raising fuel consumption) depending on the direction it is traveling in.
