A. They work up to a point. If you have an unusual name they can be helpful. If your name is Smith or Jones, forget it.

A. As a poster above mentioned, there are a number of geneology websites out there that tap into government database and can pull a wide range of information about individuals. You just type in their name, approximate year they were born (and state where they were born if you know it) and they will automatically search through a wide range of government matches and return possible matches. One of the most useful types of records are census reports. Every 10 years the government collected the name, age, place of birth, place of residence, profession, education level and family relationships of everybody (or most everybody). These are incredibl useful as they can tell you a lot about a person and lead you toward other places to search. The… [cont.]

A. I agree with everything Violet, just above me, said, but my stock answer has some links. If you can get back to1900 - 1930 by yourself, give these a try. This is a text file I paste to questions like yours. People ask similar questions 3 - 14 times a day here. You get a long, detailed answer, I don't get finger cramps. It is long because there are over 400,000 free genealogy sites. It is also long because researching your family tree is as hard as writing a term paper in a History class. You don't have to be a rocket scientist, but you won't do it with five clicks. I could tell you everything I know in 30 minutes, but not 3. The fact you have to do research stops nine out of ten teens and many adults. If you didn't mention a country, we… [cont.]

Good websites with information about a Free Black Family during the Civil War? ?
Q. I am doing a civil war powerpoint about the life of a free black family. This is for a project. My teacher gave us a list of websites, but none of them are about a free black family because we all got to chose our kind of family. They were all like, "southern plantation owner" and "abolitionist family" I really would like to find some good websites that has journal entries and pictures. I need at least three websites so its not considered plagerism when I have the bibliography. Thanks a lot!

A. can't list a specific website, but look into free black population of south carolina (about 1/3 at time of civil war) or make it real interesting and study about slaves owned by free black, or white held in slavery in Africa.

A. Set your Internet Security Parental Controls so that it will block things you don't want them viewing or visiting... You might try the recycle bin...or trash...other than that you would need special software to monitor all activities which you can purchase.

A. Yeah. Try us here. As offered above, we have people here who generously do lookups. Email the lady.. or, you also can post here, and you will get several answers, maybe each with different types of info. The best known site for researching things like census records is ancestry.com. Most of us regulars know that the fee is well worth it. For a beginner, you may not be ready for that, which is fine. There are also thousands of free sites. The catch is in knowing how to use them. Basically, they have RECORDS.. not family trees. You do the work part of recognizing which facts are really yours. Take a few minutes to visit a couple of sites that I use.. www.rootsweb.com, has a tutorial linked on the main page. www.cyndislist.com is the… [cont.]

A. You have 2 sets of grandparents totaling 4 people, 4 sets of great grandparents totaling 8 people, 8 sets of great great grandparents totaling 16 people. The only way those people number would not be the same is if there are some duplicates. It pyramids as you go back. Actually at one point in the last millennium the number of greats(don't know how many it is) if each were a different person they would total up more than the population of the world at that time. The only way to know your ancestry is to research it starting with yourself and working back one generation at a time, documenting everything as you do. Don't expect to put a name into a website and there it all is and it is accurate. You don't want to get overly involved in… [cont.]

Do you think genealogy "family finder" websites like Ancestry.com are an invasion of privacy?
Q. I don't know, I think that the idea of compiling family records and phone numbers (though legal) is somewhat unethical, since I'm sure there are family members or relatives in ANY family that want to maintain their privacy, and don't want to be contacted or their personal information accessed. What do you think about it?
Asked by Samian Loves Sexy Scene Girls! - Wed Jun 17 23:44:08 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. a Generally speaking Ancestry.Com does not have information on living people. Any phone numbers etc you find on the living in their records are not as much information you can find on Yahoo People Search or Zabasearch. They get them from phone books which is public information. If you post your family tree in the Public Member Tree anyone that is not shown as deceased will be shown as "Living Smith,' for example to anyone else unless you extend a specific invite to someone to view your tree. On the old Ancestry World Tree, anyone not shown as deceased born 1930 and after were also listed as "Living Smith." I actually had a daughter of a first cousin that died and for a long time they still wouldn't allow her name to be seen as she… [cont.]

A. Make an album of your favourites with journaling about why you love particular photos. I think you would love to look back on your photo journal and enjoy it for years! You can go to my site to find out how to make a scrapbook: Many people are using photos to decorate all sorts of things these days - I have seen a chair with customised photos on it, some drink coasters with photos decorating them, bedspreads and curtains likewise - you can order printed things from lots of different photo companies. Try Snapfish for example but make sure you go to the site in your own country (mine is in Australia so that's the page I've referred you to!): Whatever you do, enjoy your photos!

A. Websites probably won't help you fill in any gaps over the last 75-100 years, because there are rules preventing publication of recent information, so you're better off asking your family to get the more recent stuff. Once you get back to 1901, the easiest way to start tracing your family is by finding them in the census ( has the 1881 census. has the 1841-1901 censuses, but you have to pay to use them. However, you can usually use it free in most public libraries. is free but very incomplete). You can look up the births, marriage and deaths indexes on but to get the full information you'll need to send for the certificates themselves, which is very expensive ( 6 or 7 each last time I ordered one) I like this site - it lists… [cont.]

Q. I am from a big family, spread all over. We want to plan a reunion for next year. Since, we have been out of touch for so long, I am looking for a site that would bring us all together, with pics and videos, so we wont feel like such strangers when we meet next year.
Asked by Wonderer - Sat Aug 2 04:39:25 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Why not create your own family website. They are very inexpensive - I know of several families who have done this. By keeping it password protected you may include fairly personal family information such as birth dates! Everyone can upload pictures fairly easily and in that way anyone who wishes can download photos for inclusion into their own album. Have fun and keep planning!! Oh, a genealogy tree is fun to do also - if you need help ask under the heading of genealogy on this site and I am certain you will be able to get instructions.

Does anyone know of any good websites for minimalist living with a family?
Q. My family is moving due to my husband's job. We went house hunting last week and chose a very small house. It's very close to his work, close to the city center, had a nice big yard but the rooms in the house are TINY. The whole house was renovated last year so we felt the positive aspects made it worth a try. I would like some information on storage, organization, minimalist living etc. ideas.

A. Minimalist furniture is generally very basic style. Most minimalist furniture are made of metal and glass and are simple in design. Minimalism often involves lots of straight horizontal and vertical lines. Usually black and white colours and shades of beige. also look at Channel 4 interior design programmes. Website selling minimalist furniture, be warned some o things can be expensive, especially the seats

A. You are asking two different things. Long Lost Relatives- Try Zabasearch.com or Yahoo People Search. Don't expect to fnd living people on genealogy websites as it is considered an invasion of privacy and can lead to identity theft. Family Tree Information - see my reply I have cut and am pasting. It is lengthy but there are good things and there are pitfalls in expecting to find it all and accurate on the internet. There might be a person or two that are on this board regularly that resents seeing lengthy answers and the same info. However, what they don't understand, we don't answer questions to entertain the regulars but to help people who have never been on this board and are sincerely interested in family history You start with… [cont.]
