How do military wives deal with their husbands being away so much?
Q. My husband has his own business and he is always busy at work. He has been working extra hard these days because of the recession. We always get in fights before he's so busy all the time, then I wonder: how do military wives deal with it? Their husbands are away for months at a time, and overseas. Please tell me (especially if you are a military wife.) I would really appreciate it it. Thanks.

A. You realize it will happen. You have to stay busy. Work, go to school, volunteer your time, start a new hobby etc. Each person learns to cope in their own way but the military offers lots of support groups.

How has being in the military changed you?
Q. Military Commercials always advertise that they'll change you into great leaders when you come home and you're out of the military. I just wanted to know from personal experiences if anyone could give me an example in how being in the military made you a better person/leader. I respect all military people for fighting for my freedom, thanks.

How do graduate programs at military colleges work?
Q. I'm looking for a graduate program in military history, and all the best ones seem to be at military institutions (obviously). If attend a military college for a graduate program, do I have to join the military, or can I just go for the degree? I must also specify that I would prefer to not do an online program or degree
Asked by Frost - Mon May 4 22:53:51 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The military has graduate schools as well like the Naval Postgraduate School. These institutions are not available for general enrollment. You must either be in the military and be assigned there as a student, some US government civilians can apply as well depending on the program, or you have to be a foreign military officer/government worker and apply through the US s foreign military assistance. I am at NPS now in an engineering program. It is second rate and the people I know in the international relations program it is called national security studies are also going through a second rate program. Private college graduate programs in the US are far superior.

A. I suggest that you review the VetGuide service credit chapter to better understand what service counts for leave accrual and retirement purposes with the federal government. Because each case is unique, you also should be working with your agency's human resources department to determine what documentation they require with regard to this type of request. Military wives: How long after the wedding did you get pregnant?
Q. I just married into the Navy last month, and his friends are joking and betting on when I'll be pregnant. Yikes! We don't want to have kids for a few more years, but it seems to be a popular trend that military wives - or even newlyweds in general - are getting pregnant soon after they get married! Just would like to hear your stories:) Thanks!

A. I was in the military when I had my first two children, and now I am a military spouse and have just had my third. DO NOT rush into having children especially if your husband is in the military and could be deployed. Make sure you are OK with his work schedule and with him possibly being gone for long periods of time (at which time you become a single parent). I truly believe that too many women get pregnant too soon and then they become overwhelmed and can not handle what the military has to offer. Yes we have medical and a guaranteed paycheck and free housing if you choose it, but we don't always have a spouse. If you don't have personal experience with the military (ie you are prior military or maybe a parent was) don't rush it!!! It… [cont.]

why did the bolivian military decide to kill che guevara without a trial?
Q. Furthermore, didn't the CIA and the blivian military realize that his death would immortalize him as a martyr? were there any plans to capture him rather than kill him? by "capture" I mean imprison. Che guevara was captured before getting shot. also his killer is well known and has been interviewed by the media.

A. why risk lives to capture a known mass murderer- a man who is armed and dangerous? the "martyr" bit was intended from the beginning- by Guevaras masters. That is why he was sent into Bolivia in the first place- and then cut off from supplies. In Cuba he was becoming a liability- incompetent administrator with a liking for rape and torture. So what better way of getting rid of a stinking mercenary? Moreover no one really knows who shot Guevara- it just might have been one of his soviet sponsored "minders"

A. They each have different mission statements. Marine recon is just that; recon. They generally go out, scout, infiltrate and report back and directly fire. Seals are usually a quick reaction force. They land, rescue/recover and exit. Green Berets (SF) are longer term forces. Dropped behind lines, work with underground fighters, sabotage, etc. may be gone months. Like working with the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan early in the war. Ranger are basically elite army forces. Now these are very general and the jobs do overlap considerably as conditions mandate so none of this is carved in stone. Also Recon, Seals and SF personell often combine in team for various missions when required. Recon teams often have Navy Corpmen who may be… [cont.]

A. Unfortunately alot of "mercs" won't take someone with asthma. Blackwater and a few other contractors won't touch you unless your physically fit. If your last asthma attack has not been within the last 5 years, you may be eligible for the military. You will have to get a cardiopulminary exam by your own physician and submit that paperwork to your local recruiter. To be honest with you, most recruiters will brush you off, so make sure you follow up if the above is true. If you still have asthma and take an inhaler, unfortunately you will not be fighting.

What website does the military use to figure out military training to college credits?
Q. It is a website that puts all your information together from all training you did in the military and it turns them into college credits.
Asked by Erico - Mon Aug 18 01:10:23 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The Navy and Marines use SMARTS. They compile a transcript of all military and civilian schooling and you take it to whatever college you are planning on attending and have them tranfer whatever credits you have for the degree you are pursuing. There are several colleges that provide distance learning for the military. https://www.navycollege.n avy.mil/faqs.html

A. No, that Im sure she needs a passport for. Only active duty can travel on orders and military ID to and from their duty station because it is as if they never left the U.S. She needs to apply(if she does not have it) for a Philippine Passport, then you need to find out if she needs a Visa to enter Europe (there are websites that tell you what countries need visas to enter certain countries). Once she arrives in Portugal, I believe you will have to apply for a sojourners visa so that she can stay with you during your tour. Your command should be able to give you that information. If you need further help, go to the Family Fleet Services in your area, and Im sure they will assist you as much as possible, or they will guide you in the… [cont.]

What happens when a woman in the military gets pregnant?
Q. I lived on a military base for two years, and this never came up, to my knowledge. Are women allowed to get pregnant while in the military? Is it encouraged? Discouraged? Is there some kind of penalty? What about women who get pregnant while on tour somewhere in the world? It seems like there would be a lot of women in Iraq getting pregnant just to go home. Or maybe there's a ban on sex in a war zone. I'm really curious now, I've never heard anyone discuss this. Any military people out there have answers for me?
Asked by crazy_ari_girl - Wed Jul 23 22:13:04 2008 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you get pregnant while in, they give you a choice to stay in or get out. If you stay in you get 6 weeks of maternity leave to recover. After that you have 6 months to get back into shape. Pregnancy is neither encouraged or discouraged, they can't really stop you from having sex if you are at your duty station. You can get pregnant if you want to, just make sure the guy isn't married, not in your Chain of Command, or and Officer if you are enlisted. If it was me i would try to make sure I was married first, so you don't look like a barracks slut. To get pregnant while deployed is HIGHLY discouraged, as you are not supposed to be having sex over there, you can receive UCMJ (Art 15) for getting pregnant while deployed. Who would want… [cont.]

What should ufologists make of military presence?
Q. Have you seen the UFO Hunter episode just shown on the History Channel. They have criteria for an area to be proclaimed a UFO hotspot. I am wandering what to make of the criteria of there being a military post nearby. Maybe they see the post as being there to investigate UFOs. But could they be the origin of the UFOs. UFOs tend to be military aircraft that are experimental and secret. Correct?

Asked by weewee - Sun Jun 7 23:29:38 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Ownership in your private, off-duty life is treated just like you were a civilian. Your military weapons are issued to you while on duty, they are kept on the base. You cannot take them home and your enlisted status does not entitle you to any special private ownership rights. Now that being said, the M9 (I assume you mean the Italian 9mm semi-auto pistol?) is a perfectly legal firearm for a civilian. You can buy handguns in Maryland no problem, just as long as you pass the background check and waiting period. Any licensed gun shop has the paperwork there and can give you the whole explanation. Know that in Maryland, you must keep the handgun at home, or travel with it in a box. It is illegal to carry concealed or openly, and… [cont.]

A. You didn't say what country you are in but I'll assume the US. Nearly any job you can think of is available to you in the military. The cool part is they will training and if you can avoid combat, you can get paid to do what you love. I don't know all the current details of military recruitment so you'll need to talk to a recruiter. I can't emphasis this enough, don't believe what they say until you see the enlistment contract you'll be signing. 99% of recruiters are honest but a few will promise anything. I would also insist on speaking with someone in the military who is doing the career you want to pursue. Mike Honeycutt
