Who to use as a reference on a job application if you have none?
Q. In other words, if you have never been employed before, who would you use as a reference on your employment application? I'm aware that family is not recommended. My only valid job reference is a resort in FL and i worked for the summer but was not on a payroll. I simply worked and was payed directly from my employer. That is only one of three references that i'm required to have. I want tips from experienced long-time workers.

A. At the beginning of your career, this is known. So bring in references from 3 teachers or 3 folks that you babysat for or helped out. Bring in 3 personal references too. Just be honest about your lack of experience. In many entry level jobs, this is exactly what they want, as they want to train you to their way of doing things.

What does this reference number mean on ferderal taxes?
Q. I went online to check the status of my federal income tax return. When I entered in all the information a page came up saying that they can not provide any information on my return (it has already been accepted) and that I need to call the IRS and tell them reference number 9001. Does anyone know what that reference number means?

A. I'd recommend calling them and telling them what you experienced - it sounds like an internal number they use to identify the problem with your query.

What is the oldest reference of the dead coming back to life?
Q. The term "Undead" wasn't even created until late 1800's in Dracula. But we all should know that there have been references to the undead long before that. Egyptians? The Bible? Tribal indians? Cave paintings? What is the absolute oldest reference to the dead coming back to life?

A. The Egyptians. Osirus was supposedly brought back from the dead by his wife/sister Isis long enough to conceive his son Horus. Then he was appointed/took over the job of king of the underworld. Its kind of a creepy legend with the incest and having sex with zombies. I don't think we can tell with enough detail on cave painting walls, but they may have had such a legend. Too bad all the details are lost.

How does a job reference work? Do you provide it or do they contact your old company?
Q. Do you get a letter of reference when leaving a job and provide it with your CV? Or do the company you wish to work for contact your old company and ask for a reference? I work for a very large global corporation, on a placement year in between university years 2 and 3. Will an employer contact a big company like this for details? Or just confirmed I worked there?

A. Usually you provide a list of references to a potential employer and it is up to the potential employer to contact the references you provide. The references don't always have to be former subordinates, especially if you did not have a good re-pore with your subordinate. You can use fellow colleagues that you worked on projects with to be a reference. If you do use a former employer/manager make sure you left the company on good terms. Even though you think a former employer/manager will provide you with a positive reference, you never know. It may be better to get a letter in writing so that you can review it before using it. But most potential employers like to call from your reference list. Again, just be sure they will leave you a… [cont.]

Can anybody give me a reference from the Quran or similar to show that Islam is against homosexuality?
Q. I don't need a quotation, just a reference to go with the statement that Islam shares a general negative view on homosexuality or at least 'homosexual acts' with Christianity. I've already got the equivalent references to passegesin the Bible, so I need page number, title, edition etc of some kind of Muslim text.

What are the reference points for all the lane positions when it comes to driving?
Q. I'm trying to figure out what the reference points are for lane position 1-4 and I haven't been able to figure it out. I also need to know how far away from the curb/center line the car is from each lane position.
Asked by doulbek - Sun Sep 23 18:36:29 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A standard traffic lane is 11 or 12 feet wide. Some states have full 12 foot shoulders. Others have 8 foot shoulder or a partial shoulder which is 4 foot paved width and the rest grass or gravel. As for reference points, there is not a set beginning other than what is specified in engineering documents.

How do reference an appendix in a dissertation?
Q. Please help, Theres the text that i've put in to the main body that complements the table that's going in the appedix. I've done one reference for the text properly and then I've done another reference for the appendix. Although I'm sure this is wrong, please help me!

A. I would include all references in the main list - you can place the appendix before the references (in the Harvard System) which would make sense. Your tutor should give you guidance as to which your examiner is likely to prefer (that's what they are there for).

A. In MLA you cite the author and chapter as well as the whole book. The in-text citation would be the author's last name and the book's page #. The works cited would be as follows: Lastname, First name. "Title of Chapter." Title of Collection. Ed. Editor's Name(s). Place of Publication: Publisher, Year. Pages of chapter.

What do insurance companies do with crime reference numbers?
Q. I've recently had my mobile stolen in Spain, i reported it to the police and have been given a crime reference number, but the statement is totally in Spanish. Do insurers have to check the statement to pay out?
Asked by Beck - Wed Sep 3 06:44:26 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most people who try to defraud insurance companies don't report the 'theft' to the police as they think the possible consequences are far more serious than just getting caught out by an insurance company. As a result a crime number gives a little more credibility to your claim. The insurance company may check further, they may not, but they'll certainly take it more seriously if you've reported the crime to the police.

How do I write a character reference letter for a friend that is trying to obtain a pistol permit?
Q. I have been asked to write this reference for her, but she has not given me any guidelines to do so. Is there any official forms to fill out or is it like a job reference letter just something off the hip? I mean you go and ask someone to write a reference for you. What information can your employer put in a reference?

A. The short answer is that they can put anything they like - this business of 'they can't say anything bad' is a folk myth. If you were a disaster and they gave a bland 'he/she was OK' type of reference, your former employer could be liable for misleading the recipient of the reference. That said, the former employer must be able to substantiate any negative comments in a reference; it can't be a subjective rant (although fair comment is permissible)! Often a potential employer will ask about the reason for leaving, current salary etc. Your former employer may decline to do anything but confirm the dates you worked, but otherwise would have to answer honestly - one reason why 'tricky' references are often done by telephone...

Q. I just emailed the reference, and they said they would decline a reference for me. I cannot get through the the manager, only their answer phone.
Asked by poloniusbog - Fri Jun 20 18:47:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Decline usually means the person will not discuss you at all - good or bad. You will have to take your chances - if you get an interview, be honest about your references. Any employer appreciates humble honesty - unless the bad reference could be about drunkenness, drug use, stealing, and or boinking the boss's daughter or son.

A. Breathing is related to cellular respiration in that it provides a mechanism for gas exchange (intake of oxygen and expulsion of carbon dioxide). The intake of oxygen is required for the process of cellular respiration, where oxygen acts as a final electron acceptor in aerobic cell resp. As to your basketball player, when he bends his legs to take his free throw and he moves his arms (any sort of muscle contraction) this requires ATP, which is in turn generated by cell respiration, which is driven by external respiration (breathing). Thus, without breathing, a basketball player could only generate ATP anaerobically through lactic acid fermentation which could throw off his/her aim. Or more to the point, breathing provides the oxygen that… [cont.]

How can I make sure I get good reference from current employer?
Q. I am planning on leaving because my current employer is not paying me enough & are not responding properly even after asking for raise. I will make sure to talk nicely with them & keep my last day flexible(2 weeks to 2 months). But I am still afraid they might not give me good reference. I am confidant in myself. Will only employment confirmation (pay stub & offer letter)& my work samples be enough for me to get good job?

How long does it take for a bankers reference from Nationwide and HSBC Bank?
Q. My letting agent has recently written to mine and my partners banks for a bank reference. How long does this normally take, its so far been 4 working days and my estate agent havent heard anything yet.

A. Call your branch, check that they've received the request. Request must include your authority to give info to the agent, your authority to pay the fee ( 8.50), and the details of the request (how much and how often - eg 500 per month). Reply should be sent by the bank within 5 working days of receipt, the sending and receiving bit is up to the Post Office.
