What artificial sweeteners are worse for you than others?
Q. I know that people say all artificial sweeteners ar bad but which ones are the worst? Do not answer if you are going to say sugar is the best for you b/c you will be annoying me. I just want to know which artificial sweeteners to stay away from.

A. Saccharin (aka Sweet and Low) is the worst, it causes cancer. Aspartame (aka Equal) is not as bad but some people who are unusually sensitive get life threatening allergic reactions from it. Sucralose or Splenda is the major sweetener that I have not read of any health risks for.

How can I use rhubarb with sugar or other sweeteners?
Q. I have some fresh organic rhubarb but am on a diet where I cannot use any sweeteners including sugar, honey, and all artificial sweeteners. Can I use a really sweet fruit or prepare it in a savory way that does not need a sweetener?
Asked by Athena - Mon May 19 13:55:43 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Cook the rhubarb down to sauce consistency.Just add a vey small amount of water to the rhubarb to get it cooking as rhubarb has a lot of water content. Once the sauce is made add a tin of crushed pineapple to it and let cool. Excellent!

What are best artificial sweeteners to cook with?
Q. I have a very lg. crowd coming here for Thanksgiving dinner. I will have help with cooking and serving but, my favorite uncle is diabetic and I want to make a special dessert for him myself. What sweeteners would be good to use for cooking and can I cook ahead? I have heard you can't cook with certain artificial sweeteners. Also, something I could freeze so that he can take some home with him. Would appreciate your input.

A. MY mom has diabetes. She uses Splenda which isn't totally sugar free but a lot less or she uses Sweet and Low. An all natural sweetener that doesn't contain sugar is a root called Stevia. You can buy it in the liquid form at many natural food stores. It tastes very similar to sugar and doesn't have the bad side effects of the manufactured sweeteners.

Can anybody tell me about different sweeteners?
Q. I need to know some information for a science project about different sweeteners-brown sugar, sweet n low, and splenda. I'm only allowed to use one website, so if you could tell me a website with all of them that'd be GREAT. But I'm allowed to use a website if the information comes from a book. Or, if you have a book that has any info at all about any of those sweeteners, that'd be GREAT too, as long as you tell me what book it's from, the author, and the copyright date. Thank you soo much!

What Is Your Opinion On Artificial Sweeteners?
Q. I have been using splenda for a long time now when I eat my breakfast of oatmeal. My parents have always been against it, they think all this new stuff will give me cancer. I have been suffering from bad migraines lately which is nothing new, iv suffered from migraines for a while and I'm on medications. But he said they did a study and connected artificial sweeteners to headaches. Is this true? What should I do in place of this during breakfast? What's your view?

A. I think plain ole sugar is better than the un-natural additives such as artificial sweeteners. Just in case you were not aware. Do you know how Splenda/Sucralose was discovered. Its scary, but it was discovered by accident when they were developing an insecticide. I dont eat any artificial sweeteners and check everything for them. They are even in toothpaste. If you are curious about them this article provides some good info. Artificial Sweeteners Could Be Hidden in Your Foods and Medications

Is the new artificial sweeteners like Truvia made from a Stevia plant bad for you like Aspertane?
Q. There are a number of new sweeteners on the market. Does anybody have any additional information about them. I planted a Stevia plant and did not know how to process it to use it for common uses like cereal and baking. Any suggestions? Is the products sold in stores like Truvia and Ideal made from the stevia plant?

A. They make the Stevia already made into the sweetener..you can buy that if you want. However, it doesn't taste very good...it is a bit bitter. I use PureVia, it is made from Stevia but has 1 gram of Erythritol per serving which is a natural sugar alcohol.

Does whether of not we can taste artificial sweeteners depend on our genes?
Q. I can taste all types of fake sugar immediately even when I assume that its not in something. Most people I've talked to said they can't tell the difference between sucrose and sucralose at all. Does sucralose and other artificial sweeteners taste so repulsive and bitter to me just because I'm not used to them or is there something else going on? Could it be that the shape of the molecules in my tongue cause me to be more sensitive?

Freeze for 4+ hours. It is about 200 calories per slice. Does the Fruit 2O waters have artificial sweeteners in them?
Q. I've been reading that artificial sweeteners aren't good for pregnancy (good right because I hate that stuff anyways) but lately, I've been drinking the Fruit 2O waters because I get sick drinking soda, juice or milk. Which is ironic in itself because I've always hated being healthy and drinking water and now this kids is making me do just that lol :-) Anyways, I was wondering if those kinds of waters are okay. *kid's sorry, typo!
Asked by who? - Wed Nov 18 08:42:34 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I looked it up in wikipedia. Read the link here; The current ingredients vary slightly with each flavor, but generally include purified water, less than 2% of natural flavor, citric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, sucralose (Splenda), acesulfame potassium, sodium benzoate, and potassium sorbate. It contains no calories, fat, or sugar. So yep, it does have artificial sweeteners in it. To be honest it is only water that is actually `safe to drink. But a glass or two won t harm you. Just don t drink only that. Make sure you drink plenty of water too.

What effect, if any, does intake of artificial sweeteners have on blood sugar levels in diabetics?
Q. I am a recently diagnosed diabetic, taking the maximum dose of one of the combination metiformin drugs. My sugar still isn't entirely under control yet, though my intake of sugars and starches is almost nil. Do artificial sweeteners impact the ability of the body to metabolize sugars? What other steps can I take to reduce my blood sugar level, short of going onto insulin? Yes, I do get exercise every day, and yes I am working on losing weight.

A. the sugar mentioned in "blood sugar" is glucose. natural sugars and starches are metabolized to glucose. if you use a sweetener that is not a carbohydrate, those with chemical formula Cn(H2O)n, you probably won't see an increase in glucose (although, since there is carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen present in those artificial sweeteners, it is theoretically possible for your body to build glucose out of their metabolites). For example, aspartame has the chemical formula C14H18N2O5. in order to raise your blood glucose, your body would need to convert this to C6H12O6. i'm not aware of any enzyme that catalyzes this conversion. xylitol, sucralose, saccharin, and others do not have the necessary Cn(H2O)n structure to be converted to glucose.… [cont.]

A. White sugar does cause weight gain. A natural sweetner like honey or brown rice sugar is better. Aspartame is not good. Splenda is okay. Even though sweetners contribute less to obesity, studies have shown that some people are more likely to consume much more and overall end up eating much more in some cases. Aspartame(Nutra Sweet, Equal) can cause cancer. Anything with sucralose not sucrose is better. There are pros and cons to all sweetners.

There is no perfect way to do it, but there are a number of exercises that will help according to Dr. Peter Francis of San Diego State University. He compared various stomach exercises to see which ones were the best overall to flatten the belly. Stomach exercises don t remove fat from the belly alone, but help with fat loss overall, which in turn leads to fat loss on the belly. That is how any exercise or weight loss works. How does Truvia compare to other sweeteners such as Equal or Splenda?
Q. I just bought some Truvia at the store since they just started selling it. It tastes good and dissolves very quickly. Plus no aftertaste. As far as I can tell it comes from the stevia plant, but I haven't heard of any downside to this sweetener. It seems to be all natural, but without knowing much about it I can't tell if it's a better alternative.

By all means, stay away from artificial sweeteners, especially Splenda! I like to say sucralose, not Splenda, because that is what Splenda is. And it is in a lot of stuff Sadly, the package doesn't have to say Splenda, or diet, to have sucralose in it. You have to read labels. So, you might still be using it and don't even know it! A lot of people, including myself, have gotten/are getting sick from it. Sucralose is poison. It ruined five years of my life. I had a laundry list of medical problems while taking it. Asked by abdurrahmandawood - Fri Mar 14 12:28:52 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There is no safe dose at all for artificial sweeteners. If you have to have one, use Stevia, which is a natural sweetener that has been used in Japan for decades without any reported bad effects. Read up on the chemicals you've mentioned, and you'll find that there are all kinds of potentially bad side-effects. As a type II, the use of aspartame is particularly troubling. There is anecdotal evidence that aspartame messes with sugar metabolization and can increase the chance of obesity. The ideal situation would be to ween yourself off of artificially sweetened drinks.

Do artificial sweeteners promote tooth decay faster than real sugar?
Q. I was raised using artificial sweeteners when I drink tea, and I still use them to this day. Do they decay your teeth faster than regular sugar?

A. to the best of my knowledge no they do not. sugar does because it actually creates bad bacteria in your mouth which eats at the enamel of your teeth. i have heard if you have eaten stuff with sugar in it and let's say you cannot brush your teeth, eat some dairy products like cheese, or drink some milk. those actually kill the bad effects of the bacteria that the sugar had created in your mouth. but obviously brushing with a good toothpaste would be best.

What is the effect of artificial sweeteners on our metabolism?
Q. Is there any difference between normal sugars and artificial sugars and their effect? Could this be a good topic for a science project? Any experiments I could do?

A. The more refined the sugar the more it will give you a sugar rush. As for artificial sweeteners that are chemically made They are "free" (not attached to a fatty acid so They can do more harm inside you as they try and stabilise.
