What artificial sweeteners are worse for you than others?
Q. I know that people say all artificial sweeteners ar bad but which ones are the worst? Do not answer if you are going to say sugar is the best for you b/c you will be annoying me. I just want to know which artificial sweeteners to stay away from.

A. Saccharin (aka Sweet and Low) is the worst, it causes cancer. Aspartame (aka Equal) is not as bad but some people who are unusually sensitive get life threatening allergic reactions from it. Sucralose or Splenda is the major sweetener that I have not read of any health risks for.

A. Try Stevia. It is an herb and as such most likely better than anything "artificial." Researching online, I've read some very disturbing things about Splenda and Aspartame.

What do you think about chewing gum with Artificial sweeteners? Especially if you life a healthy lifestyle?
Q. I buy the real expensive organic/natural gum online. But the flavor doesn't last long worth a flip, I tried the gum "Layers from Trident" today and i really liked it. Thing is it has sorbitol, and Aspatame. Which I know are like the worst artificial sweeteners possible. Do you know any brands that have a long lasting flavor to it :-/ And what do you think about chewing gum with Artificial sweeteners, do you do it even though you live a active healthy lifestyle?

A. I try to avoid artificial sweeteners because they're just nasty. Check out B-Fresh gum, which is sugar-free and sweetened with Xylitol. If you have dogs, though, keep it out of their reach; Xylitol is toxic to dogs.

What is a good feasible high school experiment related to the effects of artificial sweeteners on humans?
Q. i also have to form a question for the project. e.g. what are the e ffects of artificial sweeteners on us?
Asked by Anonymous - Sat Dec 22 18:48:05 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Here's an easier one, and it might even be more relevant to why artificial sweeteners are a social ill; by altering one's perception of taste, they mean that, for instance, most people don't think of carrots as sweet (which they certainly are). How do artificial sweeteners alter perception of taste? You'd start by either giving people water plain or with a lot of artificial sweetener added. Have them drink it slowly, so they taste it. Then have them eat carrots, beets, or apples and rate them on a sweetness scale. People who just drank water should think of them as sweeter than people who drank the artificial sweetener.

Why do food manufacturers even add artificial color or sweeteners?
Q. I mean, if they wanted to generate more profit, couldn't they just stop putting artificial colors and sweeteners in food, which they buy from other chemical manufacturers (correct me if I'm wrong here). So less buying for the company, relatively the more profit the company will make, and that does not even include product sales yet. For those of you who are thinking this way now, I'm not saying that they should leave artificial ingredients out and replace them with natural ingredients, which I know are more expenisve. Im saying that if it is an artificial ingredient, then just leave it out of the product altogether.

A. Food manufacturers try to make things look the way people think they are supposed to look. I prefer the natural color and when I make lime pies, I don't add green color. However, most people believe that lime juice is green (it isn't) and so they think a lime pie shold be light green. If the manufacturer makes the lime pie its natural color it will probably sell less. Same thing with mint. Mint doesn't turn everything bright green, but mint chocolate chip ice cream is often this sickly bright green color. Most people don't prepare their own food so they have fallacious ideas about what food looks like. I agree with you. I don't want extra sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and food coloring in everything.

Is high fructose corn syrup better than artificial sweeteners?
Q. Of course, both are very bad for your health, but people always choose diet products that contain artificial sweeteners to avoid food/drink products sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, but artificial sweeteners are pretty much made with poison. So when it comes down to it, which is the least detrimental for your health to consume?
Asked by Anna - Thu Jul 1 18:36:07 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. everybody thinks that artificial sweeteners contain carcinogens but the only time that was ever found was in the 70s. They did a study with lab rats giving them enormous amounts of saccharin and some of them got tumors. In the last 4 decades there have never been any studies that replicate that in humans. Even if you don't like saccharin splenda does not contain saccharin only sucralous and sugar oils. So art. sweeteners are not poison but the carb. in sodas isn't good for your diet.

what can I use as a natural alternative to sugar (not aspartame etc sweeteners)?
Q. Don't want to use any artificial sweeteners with aspartame etc. I've tried fruit sugar with a vanilla pod left in, and I want something healthier. I know I should avoid sugar but i'd rather have fruit with a bit of sugar than deny myself and end up having a chocolate bar. I have no sugars in my tea but I cannot eat raspberries (or similar) without sugar, any ideas?? Whats good about honey? Maple Syrup? What should I choose.

Why do people say that artificial sweeteners are bad for you?
Q. even my chemistry teacher said it. I think it's all BS. How are they bad when real sugar is the cause of obesity? You have people like me for instance, who have to go onna sugar free diet. So if I can't use sweeteners or sugar, what the hell am I suppose to use? well I read that truiva is a natural sweetener, so that is safe. I,d rather not consume sugar when fruits already have enough.

can you gain weight just from ingesting artificial sweeteners?
Q. I have read about those that use them then get cravings for more sweets and ultimately eat more food that way, but if you don't do that, would you gain weight just from the artificial sweeteners? Does your body release insulin when you ingest the artificial sweeteners, even though they don't have any caloric or carbohydrate value?
Asked by kemo - Fri Apr 30 22:41:33 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Insulin can be triggered by just the thought of food in some people. One of the diet programs (carb addicts diet) is based on controlling insulin to 1 hour per day. They contend that insulin can create a rebound effect after that, pumping out more insulin to very little stimulus. I don't know if artificial sweeteners will trigger this in someone who has a controlled carb way of eating (less than 9g carbs per hour) from what I've heard depends on the person & their insulin sensitivity. One of the claimed side effects of aspartame is weight gain. I am sure they tested this in a lab setting with no other causes. Whether this is insulin induced or by some other effect, I don't know. I have lots of concerns with aspartame & weight gain… [cont.]

A. If you're doing low carb diet, you should avoid regular coffee or tea that have caffeine. Tazo Passion Tea is awesome with absolutely nothing added. You can make it hot or iced. Flavored carbonated waters. Water with lime or lemon. Have you tried Splenda? It's the one AS that doesn't have a funky after taste or give me headaches. It's also the recommended sweetner for low carb.

Does the Fruit 2O waters have artificial sweeteners in them?
Q. I've been reading that artificial sweeteners aren't good for pregnancy (good right because I hate that stuff anyways) but lately, I've been drinking the Fruit 2O waters because I get sick drinking soda, juice or milk. Which is ironic in itself because I've always hated being healthy and drinking water and now this kids is making me do just that lol :-) Anyways, I was wondering if those kinds of waters are okay. *kid's sorry, typo!
Asked by who? - Wed Nov 18 08:42:34 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I looked it up in wikipedia. Read the link here; The current ingredients vary slightly with each flavor, but generally include purified water, less than 2% of natural flavor, citric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, sucralose (Splenda), acesulfame potassium, sodium benzoate, and potassium sorbate. It contains no calories, fat, or sugar. So yep, it does have artificial sweeteners in it. To be honest it is only water that is actually `safe to drink. But a glass or two won t harm you. Just don t drink only that. Make sure you drink plenty of water too.

Are Sweeteners or Sugar better in hot drinks?
Q. I have recently started using sweeteners (sweetex) in my tea and I actually prefer it to sugar, but is it actually better for me? I am trying to diet and thought it would help cut out calories but heard bad things about sweeteners.

A. White sugar does cause weight gain. A natural sweetner like honey or brown rice sugar is better. Aspartame is not good. Splenda is okay. Even though sweetners contribute less to obesity, studies have shown that some people are more likely to consume much more and overall end up eating much more in some cases. Aspartame(Nutra Sweet, Equal) can cause cancer. Anything with sucralose not sucrose is better. There are pros and cons to all sweetners.

Q. I know both are unhealthy and sugary foods can put on weight. Alot of foods contain sugar and I feel like im avoiding nearly everything. I know we need some in our diet. A. you are better off consuming all natural foods with sugar then consuming artificial sweeteners. our biology (both physical and mental) knows how to metabolize natural sugars while the same can not be said for artificial sweeteners. the less chemicals that you put in your body over the lifespan the healthier you will be. the quality of the foods that are consumed in the US are a major cause of the increase in health problems.
